I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I am back with the Depresso content you’ve been all been restlessly waiting for. Yes the days might be getting shorter and yes the weather might be getting colder but one thing you can count on is when you pass Brandy Melville with your coffee, there will still be a line out the door.
Anyways let’s talk Hot Black Coffee. Although I’ve been to this coffee joint several times, I decided today would be a good day for a review. After finishing up a morning workout (humble brag) I decided I needed a coffee for my morning commute to work – side note whoever came up with the idea of a commuter coffee is a genius because without fail my brain tells me I need it. Usually I would settle for a Starbucks latte because of the ease of mobile ordering but I felt like supporting a local shop today – I did later find out that that there are actually a couple other locations in Toronto and my decision felt less authentic. One nice thing about fall weather is I can drink a hot coffee without feeling judged. It feels weird to walk around with a hot coffee when its 35 degrees out.
For the actual coffee review I am going to give a rating on 4 main categories:
1. Taste
2. Staff + Service + vibe
3. Cost
4. Would this be a good date spot?
Taste
When it comes to the taste of my oat latte, I would give it a 7.5/10. Although the espresso blend was strong, yet creamy, I found my coffee was colder than I would have liked (the milk needed to be steamed for an extra couple of seconds).
Staff + service + vibe
For the staff/vibe I would give it a 9/10. I didn’t have to wait too long, the staff was very joyful and the overall atmosphere of the coffee shop is very cozy. Also, they make fresh bread and have some local cheeses which would make a great charcuterie board gift.
Cost
The cost was 6.5/10. Being lactose intolerant (yes I’m lame) alternative milks have been a lifesaver, especially oat milk. Although almost every coffee shop charges extra for this I still found that Hot Black Coffee was a little on the expensive side. Without adding a tip the oat latte came out to just over $7.
Would this be a good date spot?
If I were to give this a rating for this, I would have to give it a 6/10. Although I really like the vibe, the seating options are pretty limited. The majority is at one big table, with the remainder being bar stools – this would definitely be one of those places you go to and then go for a stroll with your coffee.
This gives Hot Black Coffee an overall rating of 7.25/10. Would I go again, absolutely, would this be my first choice, probably not.
Later
p.s. go listen to some Fred Again.. you won't be disappointed
